open coaches

The Pithiviers Transport Museum has 6 so-called “open” cars to welcome the public when the weather is favorable, these allow you to get some fresh air and have a better view. However, they are not all the same:

"calvados"

Numbered A273 and A275, these two coaches are built on the chassis of covered wagons manufactured by Clayton, an English manufacturer, numbered K73 and K75 at TPT. When the Pithiviers Toury Tramway closed, the Loiret department gave the association a whole batch of these wagons, some of which will be transformed into open coaches. These two “Calvados” type are an evocation of semi-closed coaches built by Decauville and having traveled on the Calvados Railway. The sides have therefore been partially opened and seats are added, thus creating sorts of compartments. These coaches can accommodate 32 people each. Weighting around 4 tonnes they are relatively easy to pull.

"royan"

Numbered B106, B171 and B174, these three coaches are built on the chassis of covered wagons manufactured by Clayton, an English manufacturer, numbered D6, K71 and K74 at TPT. When the Pithiviers Toury Tramway closed, the Loiret department gave the association a whole batch of these wagons, some of which will be transformed into open coaches. These three “Royan” type are an evocation of the open type KE coaches built by Decauville and which circulated for example on the Royan Tramway. The sides of the wagons were therefore completely open and seats installed, from the creation of the museum in 1966 to welcome the first visitors. These coaches can accommodate 40 people each. Weighting around 4 tonnes they are relatively easy to pull.

The L120 or the "bathtub"

The last open coache in the park is this old beet wagon built by Decauville and coming from the Mainvilliers sugar refinery in Loiret. It was adapted for passenger coache in 1978, thanks to the addition of seats inside. It is very often integrated into summer trains which allows visitors a panorama throughout the trip, as well as taking a little sunbath during the journey. With a capacity of 16 seats, it is generally very popular with visitors, except when an unexpected downpour breaks out!
